DOUBLE THE FUN

The Impossible Project's PZ 600 Black Frame Film
I've had two Spectra cameras for some time now without giving either one of them very much love. It wasn't until I decided I wanted to play around with double exposures that I dug out my Spectra Onyx (pictured above) and gave it a spin. I took these photos of Christopher and Trevor, my husband and his twin brother. It was such a fun challenge to compose each shot! I thought double exposure portraits are the best thing ever, so I've been having fun taking them this past week!

I'm kind of sad I've overlooked the Spectra for so long. They have self timers, you can turn the flash on or off, and you can trick them into letting you take double exposures! The Impossible Project made a great video tutorial on taking double exposures, check it out. If you need a little inspiration look at all the awesome Spectra double exposures on Flickr!

Do you have a Spectra camera at home in need of some love? Why not give double exposures a spin?! The Impossible Project was awesome enough to send me a pack their pretty PZ680 film to giveaway to one lucky person! In order to win, leave a comment with your name and an email address you can be reached at! Please don't forget to leave an email address so if you win I can notify you! I'll pick a winner Tuesday, April 24th.

The Impossible Project makes three awesome films for Spectra cameras, PZ680 - a very pretty color film, PZ600 UV+ - a nice silver shade film, and PZ600 Black Frame film which is pictured above!

Hope everyone is having a fantastic Monday!

  1. I actually skipped over my Spectra for awhile last year, but this year, I've been giving it plenty of love. It even got to go on vacation with us! And double exposures are definitely fun. I love the PZ680!

  4. I got my Spectra Onyx in 2007 and had a blast with the last year of real Polaroid film. Recently rediscovered it and am finally getting the hang of PZ680. Would love another pack to put through it :-) bnedwek@gmail.com

  6. I love the format of that instant film, and those double exposures are great! I'm amazed by the kind of support and encouragement that Impossible provides to Polaroid shooters. They seem to be such a kick-ass company!
I've been wanting to shoot Polaroid for a while now, and I think that when the price of IP film goes down a little, I'll get to it. In the meantime, I need to start shooting my Fuji Instax again (my parents are bringing it to me next week).

  7. My first Polaroid was a Spectra 1200si I bought new in 2005. I just used my last pack of Polaroid Spectra film in January. I didn't know about the double exposure trick and won a Spectra Pro from an auction site that came with a pack of Polaroid film. I shot it this weekend, the chemicals were old and the divots massive, but some images did come out. zogwarg@hotmail.com

  8. I am Spectra obsessed! I always forget to try out double exposures, though they intrigue me a lot- will have to do that soon. PZ680 is my top favorite Impossible film, we get along very well! Haha.

I have never used my onyx with any impossible film yet and would love too.
Only shot some very old softone. Interesting results.

    1. I had shot some of the soft tone stuff as well, but truthfully the PZ680 and PZ 600 UV Black Frame are bad boys for this camera! So glad I'm shooting with it more, so sad it took me this long to dig it out of our camera drawer!

  11. I have two lonely Spectra cameras. For the last month or so I have been primarily using my SX70 and Pack Film cameras. Please consider bringing one of my Spectras back to the limelight. All that is needed is a pack of film... :(

Now that the shameless plug is over, I can say that I used your post today for inspiration to try a double exposure on Polaroid Sepia Type 100 film and a closeup lens. At least I can say that I have tried... Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. Hah. That was sweet, thank you Troy! How'd your double exposure come out? I'm tried a few times doing double exposures on the pack film, but i'm not very good at composing them!

  12. Wow!! Double exposure with Spectra, what a match. I think the size of the film and quality of it is best suitable for the double exposure trick. PX70 is quite constrained.
I am waiting for my first pack of PZ film to play with it. Hopefully I can get some really astonishing stuffs like yours.

Great work! I am looking forward to your artistic works ahead!

  16. Spectra film is my most favorite of the Impossible Project's loot so far. I've not gotten anything as awesome as that portrait of your husband and his twin, though – I must need more practice. :)

  21. I found my first Spectra AF a week ago on Etsy, I love it...needs a frog tongue but am using the dark slide for now. Double-exposures are another level that I may take a while to get to. It's a really intriguing concept to do a double-expo of twins...you could make a whole exhibition out of that!

  25. I love my two Spectras and use them quite a lot! I love the bigger format! It takes a bit of practice to compose the shots, especially if holding the camera vertically, but it's totally worth it! Only... I'm out of film! So, I'd love to win xD

  26. I am on the hunt for another Spectra since mine has gone missing. I had the 1200si, and I loved it for many of the reasons/features you listed! Any Polaroid that lets me turn off the flash and is even kind enough to leave the shutter open long enough to get a good exposure - well that cameraI is golden in MY book!
